Excessive bearing bush temperature will cause damage to internal components, affect the normal operation of the steam turbine, in severe cases, it will lead to unplanned shutdown of the steam turbine. It brings hidden dangers to the stable production of the device.
In 2017, the circulating hydrogen compressor unit of the 3# medium-pressure hydrogenation unit in the refinery department of a certain company experienced large fluctuations in bearing bush temperature several times after starting up for 4 months. It may be related to the formation of varnish on the surface of the bearing bush, rather than mechanical damage on the surface of the bearing bush and other factors.
Formation and hazards of lubricating oil varnish
The lubricating oil forms a "varnish" during use, which will seriously affect the heat dissipation on the surface of the bearing pad. When the quality of lubricating oil deteriorates, oxides will be produced and polymerized, and soluble and polar soft pollutants (antioxidants and base oil degradation products) will gradually be produced and dissolved in the lubricating oil. Under certain working conditions, the soft pollutants will precipitate when the concentration reaches saturation, and deposit on metal surfaces, such as bearings and gears, to form varnishs. After the varnish is produced, it will affect the heat dissipation of the metal surface, and the increase in temperature will further accelerate the oxidation of lubricating oil, forming a vicious circle.
Since the varnish seriously threatens the normal operation of the equipment, it is urgent to find an effective measure to solve the varnish. At the beginning of the varnish formation, it is a kind of soft pollutant, the "particle" diameter is less than 0.08μm, it is difficult to remove by traditional mechanical filtration, and it is easy to deposit on the surface of the component.

After more than one month of operation, the detected MPC value dropped from the original 13.7 to 3.6, and the temperature of the bearing bush remained stable. In the past 3 months, the operating temperature of the equipment has been stable, and there has been no fluctuation.
